Golden Oak Residents Enjoy "Tiki-rific" Weekend at Summerhouse!
The scent of gorgeous handmade leis, the vision of fire twirling in the hands of dancers, the thump of drum instrumentals, the taste of tropical food and drinks.
Golden Oak residents were whisked away to a tropical Tiki paradise at the first ever Tiki Weekend at Summerhouse August 14 through 17, 2014 without even leaving the community.
Upon crossing the threshold of Summerhouse on Thursday's kickoff evening, guests were adorned with fresh, handmade leis presented by Aunti Kaui and Ku'ulei — Island Guides from the Disney's Polynesian Village Resort.
From there, they made their way to the "Tiki Bar" (a festively decorated Tyler's Lounge) for custom menu delights that included tropically themed appetizers, such as pork eggrolls with green papaya and cucumber slaw. Hand-crafted tropical beverages were equally delicious and entertaining. The "Uh-Oah" was a particular hit, serving 2-4 people with a unique blend of rums, juices and spice and a big splash of flair!
Residents and their guests enjoyed the island sounds of a strolling ukulele player and Hawaiian dancing. The ambience was enhanced by Polynesian touches like Cast Members in themed costumes, fishnet d?cor, custom seashell centerpieces and more.
"We enjoyed devising every little detail," said Golden Oak Resident Services Manager Jamie Kneebone. "We wanted to magically transport our residents to an island paradise to experience authentic Polynesian food, drink, and entertainment."
Live island-style music captivated Friday evening guests in the "Tiki Bar", while Saturday evening's strolling musicians were followed by an amazing encore. Guests were dazzled poolside by a fire-knife twirler and accompanying drummers. Fun specialty drinks flowed while the flames burned bright!
The weekend culminated on Sunday with a delectable Tiki-themed supper and a stellar turnout. "I think this was a wonderful event attended by many members of our community," said one of the Golden Oak residents. "Everyone I talked to thoroughly enjoyed the food, the authentic music — even the staff were part of the theme in their colorful Island attire!"
Satisfied after the sumptuous meal, as the flames dimmed, the music faded and the fragrance of tropical flowers wafted away, residents made their way back to their homes feeling relaxed, satisfied and ready to face the world beyond their tropical paradise.
